Message from Maggie:

It’s probably not news to you that its election season.  But for me that means more than those maddening political ads and dare I say disgusting debates.  At our house it means Mr. Magpie is away from home hitting the campaign trail.  It feels different than it did last cycle maybe because we share a roof now.  This season he is up in Central New York and I’m being a supportive partner here in DC.  With my birthday around the corner, he flew me up to celebrate.  While his weekend included debate prep and lots of conference calls we fit time in for fun, too.  He’s working in the city of Syracuse and living in the story book town of Skaneateles.  If you find yourself in this beautiful part of the country here are some recos and fall must-dos.

Syracuse

  • Cafe Kabul (This friendly city cafe brews its own small-batch coffee.  I enjoyed a beautiful almond milk latte.)
  • Modern Malt (Adorable diner style lunch spot where Mr. Magpie enjoyed it’s all day breakfast and I got a very dream gluten free grilled cheese sandwich with red pepper and tomato soup.)
  • Kitty Hoynes (Owned by the family of Mr. Magpie’s boss, this traditional irish pub is located in historic armory square.  We enjoyed drinks before dinner at this lively after work spot.  Fun fact: its sister bar is The Dubliner in DC!)
  • Pastabilities (This contemporary eatery serves homemade pasta dishes & Italian-American fare in a warm, brick interior.  A campaign hang out for Mr. Magpie he raves about this restaurant’s spicy hot tomato oil served with stretchy bread.  They were sweet to bring me roasted broccoli as a gluten free dipping option.  Its been featured on the Food Network and I can now understand why!  I also enjoyed their sonoma caesar salad to start and their pipping hot gluten free pasta with house tomato sauce and sausage for my main.  Amazing!)

Skaneateles

  • Skaneateles Bakery (With Mr. Magpie at debate prep I walked from his house to this bustling bakery.  Serving up Kabul Cafe coffee and bakery classics, I enjoyed a veggie fritatta and an almond milk latte.)
  • Lakehouse Pub (This low-key hangout features a tiny but mighty menu of classic American eats. Try the chili served with tortilla chips.)
  • Skaneateles300′ (Located next to Lakehouse Pub, Mr. Magpie humored me by letting me peruse this boutique on our walk back to his rental.  Named for the lake that runs 300 feet deep, it offers designer clothing, jewelry, accessories and gifts. I got myself a top as well as few gifts for all my November birthday friends.)
  • Anyela’s Vineyard (This gorgeous vineyard offers wine tastings in both its tasting room and cellar.  There is charcuterie and cheese to enjoy fireside and views of all that gorgeous fall foliage.)
  • Sherwood Inn (Built in 1807 as a stagecoach stop across the road from Skaneateles Lake, this upscale village inn boasts a neat old tavern. We enjoyed classic American food fireside with Mr. Magpie’s boss and his wife. )
  • Bluegoose + Bluewater Grill (Enjoy lakeview dining at these sister restaurants.  Brad and I had a nice lunch and the menu includes sushi.)

LaFayette

  • Beak & Skiff Apple Orchard (This is the #1 rated apple orchard in the country!  Enjoy apple picking on your own featuring 8 varieties as well as a cafe including processed apple delights like fritters, pie, donuts, and cider. This place also boasts a huge tavern featuring Beak & Skiff hard cider and wine as well 1911 spirits.)

Marietta

  • Tim’s Pumpkin Patch (We ventured to Tim’s Pumpkin Patch for more fall fun.  Tim’s allows you to go into the fields and pick your own pumpkin.  It also has tractor wagon rides, corn maze, hay maze, and a homestyle bakery with apple cider donuts and seasonal local brews.)
