Message from Maggie:  Mr. Magpie and I spent a week in Rhode Island with his family.  As a first timer I was delighted to try a new state for our annual August trip.  Please find some recommendations and highlights from our trip below.

Charleston, RI:

Markets:

  • Charleston Mini Market (This adorable market has all the necessities, huge selection of pastries, and a fabulous butcher.)
  • Charlestown Wine and Spirits (This third generation family owned business stocked with all things alcohol is in a beautiful 4,700 square foot of post and beam building that is heated and cooled geothermal energy.)
  • Whaley farm stand (The quintessential New England farm stand with the season’s best.  Call before you go as their hours vary!)
  • Peaches farm stand (This garage is filled with fruit and vegetables and features pies and other baked goods.)

Restaurants:

  • The Bakery (Coffee shop with baked goods baked in store daily. Go early- they sell out fast and there is always a lengthy line.)

Beaches:

  • Green Hill beach (Beautiful beach, but watch out for the seaweed and crowds.)
  • Charlestown beach (Even more beautiful beach, but pay $10 to park.)

Shopping:

  • Bea’s Consignment (Great finds at great prices but call ahead. The friendly store owner doesn’t keep regular hours.)
  • Unhinged (Attached to Bea’s, but items are new not thrifted.)
  • Entwined (A contemporary and eclectic boutique with designer consignments in the front and new styles in the back.)

Wakefield, RI:

Groceries:

  • Belmont Market (This area of Rhode Island’s Fresh or Whole Foods-type Market- on the higher price point end but has specialty products.)
  • Ocean Catch Seafood Fish Market (Voted best fish market in Rhode Island.  We had great experience with the scallops, cod, and salmon!  See recipes here and here and here.)

Restaurants:

  • Ocean Mist (Very gritty but has a 180 degree waterside view.  Go there for cocktails at sunset.)

Narragansett, RI:

Restaurant:

  • Coastal Guard House (Expansive menu and amazing view.)

Shops:

  • Curiosity and Mischief Gifts and Bookstore (A quaint shop offering greeting cards, gifts, local artist work, books, and collectibles)
  • Nana’s Candy Bar (Candy!  Need I say more?)
