Must Have: A visit to Community Forklift
Message from Maggie
The previous owner installed a dog door into the backdoor of our home. I took it as a sign that we should get a dog, but Mr. Magpie disagreed. After living it with for a year we finally decided to do something about it. Our neighbors told us about a place called Community Forklift, a non-profit reuse center for home improvement. We decided to check it out. Here’s a recap of what we learned + what we found!
What's there?
Outdoor yard + 40,000 square feet warehouse of modern and vintage building materials, tools, hardware, lighting, plumbing fixtures & appliances, as well as architectural salvage, vintage furniture, and antiques.
Why is it there?
According to CF construction waste is a BIG problem + their solution is to turning the waste stream into a resource stream!
What are their hours?
9-6 p.m. daily
Where is it?
So... what did we find?
We found a door nearly identical to our current back door- but without the dog door cut out- for only $35. Check back for updates on our refurbish project- coming soon!
Check out my previous refurbish project here.
What to know ahead of time:
- Dress for the weather! The warehouse is the same temperature as it is outside.
- Don’t dress your best. The yard is dirty + the warehouse is dusty.
- Make a list ahead of time. The 40,000 foot warehouse + yard can be overwhelming but it is surprisingly organized. Know what you are looking for + it will feel less overwhelming.
- Pack a tape measurer. The items are very well marked but its worth double checking since most items are final sale.
- If you are in market for a large piece, bring a friend. Staff at CF are not able to help you load things into your vehicle.
