Message from Maggie: I found it difficult to organize this cluttered bookshelf when we moved in at 1412. I had too many photos, which made it difficult to really enjoy any of them. Not sure why it felt overwhelming, but I took this very cluttered piece into one that is visually satisfying and functional with a few tricks.
- Make tough decisions: Determine what pieces you love and those you can live without- in this location at least. Relocate or take the items to the thrift.
- Choose function + style: Rather than display books I had already read or planned to read, I chose to display cookbooks- given this bookshelves proximity to the kitchen- along side little artifacts I have gathered over the years.
- Color sort: This isn’t a must but I love the look of a color organized bookshelf. Begin by organize items into piles based on number of shelves and color.
- Display a variety of shapes and sizes: Aim for items on each shelf that are different shapes and sizes. Too much of the same size dwarfs all the items on the shelf.
- Don’t overcrowd: Be careful not to overcrowd! If you can’t see the items, your not doing the job you set out to do.
- Trial and error: See what works by giving it a try and stepping back. Make adjustments.
Cost:
This project feels like a major modern upgrade but didn’t cost a thing!
